After much anticipation, and the easing of COVID restrictions, the 2021 regular season schedule has been released by Baseball Scotland.
It has been nearly 600 days since a league baseball game has been played in Aberdeen. The last game played at George W. Chalmers Field was on September 8, 2019, resulting in a 16-10 win for the Aberdeen Express. With a solid second place finish in the league in 2019, the Express had high hopes for an even better 2020 season but the Coronavirus Pandemic put a stop to these hopes.
Now, more than a year and a half later, the club is recovering from the pandemic. Both time and an unprecedented tragedy took its toll on baseball in the Northeast of Scotland. Overall club membership has taken a hit, and mother nature has not been kind to the baseball diamond by the sea. Much needed repairs are set to take place in the coming weeks, and a recruitment campaign is ongoing as the club looks to get back to pre-pandemic membership levels.
Due to the drop in membership, the club will field only one team for this upcoming season, the Granite City Oilers. Even though numbers are down, the spirit and hopes remain high as players and coaches look forward to playing competitive games once again.
The first game of the 2021 season sees the Aberdeen Baseball Club hosting the newly established Tayport Breakers. Although the Breakers are playing their first league game, the club was formed at the end of 2019 and was set to play their inaugural season in 2020, but the pandemic derailed those plans as well. There is no doubt that the Tayport side is eager to play and show the rest of the league that they are a force to be reckoned with.
First pitch is at 1:30pm on Sunday June 6, 2021 at George W. Chalmers Field, located next to Linx Ice Arena at the beach.
